The unbearable lightness of being!
I saw “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” movie based on a novel by Milan Kundera. The incredible plays of Day Lewis (Thomas), Juliette Binoche(Tereza) and Lena Olin (Sabina) were a very well choose for the deep personalities of Milan Kundera’s novels.
I have already seen a very memorable movie from Day Lewis (Gerry) “In the Name of Father”, based on autobiography of Gerry Conlon.
In this movie, most of story happened in demonstrations and in prison, but it was full of delicate senses of human being, full of real people who have true faces and minds, and fight for justice and truth- a movie completely different from its Hollywood counterparts. The prettiest part of the movie was when father, imprisoned wrongfully, died in prison and the prisoners all at once fired a piece of paper and threw it out of the window of their cells. The dancing of the burning papers in the yard of the prison was like a whole world crying for the injustice.
The unbearable lightness of being, like most of Kundera’s books is about the complicated relationship between male and female, especially if they are spending their time in immigration, war or exile. Even though the two female actors of the movie, Tereza and Sabina, were very different in personality, they both thought their problems could be fixed by emigrating from one city to another.
The movie also had lots of memorable quotations:
In a restaurant in Geneva Sabina says to France:” Everywhere music is turning into noise. Look! They even put plastic flowers in water, and look at that building, the uglification of the world! The only place that you can find beauty is if it is overlooked! “
In a journalism office in Geneva, Tereza who was asked to do top fashion photography instead of street photography, replies: ” I would rather to be a waitress or stay at home than taking pictures of naked women”!
Tereza says to Tomas: “I wish I was insensitive and strong like you; I wonder how come people can make love with someone they don’t love”!
